A hypothetical comparison
The "fund versus its top 10 stocks" comparison is hypothetical. It uses the fund's current top holdings, not what it held in the past, and ignores taxes, trading costs and the fund's actual option positions. For single-stock funds the comparison is with the one stock, held without leverage, and is hypothetical in the same way.
